Tidal range project gets overwhelming support
Discussions with communities, businesses and residents in North Wales have always shown a clear preference for tidal energy generation over other renewables such as wind and solar.
These informal choices have now been clearly demonstrated in the results of the first public engagement for the nearby Mersey tidal power project.
The project, set to harness tidal energy from the River Mersey, aims to expand the UK’s renewable energy capacity.
A non-statutory consultation, conducted between October 1 and November 15, 2024, gathered 3,039 responses, with 92% supporting the need for increased renewable energy generation in the Liverpool City Region.
According to the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (LCRCA), more than three-quarters of respondents “strongly” supported the scheme, which could generate clean, predictable energy for at least 120 years.

As the UK looks for solutions for a grid system that is increasingly reliant on intermittent renewable, the results of the Mersey consultation underline that tidal range generation - such as the North Wales Tidal Lagoon - not only offer technical and financial advantages, but public support as well.
